Benefits of Neuromuscular Massage

Peter sams asked:

Massage involves acting and manipulating the patient’s body with pressure (structured, unstructured, stationary, and/or moving), tension, motion, or vibration done manually or with mechanical aids. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, and/or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, forearm, and feet. There are over eighty different massage modalities. The most cited reasons for introducing massage was patient demand and perceived clinical effectiveness.

Neuromuscular massage

Applied to specific muscles, often used to increase blood flow, release knots of muscle tension, or release pain/pressure on nerves. It usually involves trigger points (painful spots in a muscle) and helps break up scar tissue that has formed over the injured muscle.

Some patients can be rid of pain in only one session with a neuromuscular massage therapist, while other patients will require several sessions before a noticeable change takes place. Neuromuscular massage therapists usually spend time warming up the tissue with Swedish or traditional massage before progressing into neuromuscular massage therapy. It can also take time to actually locate the trigger point(s) because the patient may be feeling pain in areas unrelated to the source of the problem.

NMT is a deep tissue massage and is applied directly to individual specific muscles, ligaments, connective tissue & tendons that are contributing to your pain and misery. NMT excels here over the traditional relaxation massage that you may get in a spa.

When you come to visit me with your back pain you will sit in the special massage chair that you see above. Slowly and gently I will be using my thumbs, finger tips and even my elbows to explore every fiber tissue looking for bands of muscle fibers that are tighter than the rest of them.

Benefits

Postural Distortion: This is an imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes. This is a fancy way of saying your body needs a muscel alignment just like your car does after hitting a pothole!

Biomechanical Dysfunction: This refers to the imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns such as :

Poor lifting habits

Terrible golf swing

Lousy tennis stroke

Incorrect typing posture

Massage therapy and bodywork eases tension and helps people cope with stress more effectively. It slows racing thoughts and worries, helps consumers to reconnect with their body, and brings attention to the mental and physical needs of their bodies so that they may better take care of themselves. It promotes a sense of wholeness and helps enhance one’s self-image, while keeping energy levels high. Massage therapy and bodywork can be effective in preventing illness and other physical ailments if received on a regular basis.

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy successfully treats the following conditions:

Neck pain and/or stiffness such as whiplash

Shoulder Injuries

Low back pain, sciatica or hip pain

Most common back pain, spasms, and cramping

headaches

Migraines

Facial or jaw pain

Tingling and numbness of arms, hands, legs and feet

Five More Common Types of Massage

Ben Crabtree, LMT, CNMT asked:

Getting a massage therapy session is a wonderful experience. But, have you ever wanted to go for a massage therapy session and didn’t know what type of massage to get? Massage therapy uses numerous techniques that range from full-body stress relief to highly targeted methods that relieve a wide range of muscular pains and dysfunction. Five types of massage that rank among the most popular types of massage are Chair massage, Medical Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, and Aromatherapy Massage.

1. Chair Massage - also known as Seated massage, is performed while the client remains fully clothed and seated in a specially designed massage chair. The massage chair allows the Massage Therapist to massage the client’s head, neck, back, and arms in a typical 10-15 minute session using a variety of kneading, percussion, friction and movement techniques. The high portability of the massage chair and the fact that clients are fully clothed means that massage sessions can be completed nearly anywhere. Chair massage makes a great gift for employees or special clients. Receiving chair massage in the office has been shown to reduce stress and increase employee productivity. Chair massage is also a popular attraction at charity events, trade shows and conventions.

2. Medical Massage - during Medical Massage the Massage Therapist treats specific muscular and connective tissue problems with techniques directed at achieving favorable client outcomes under the supervision and written orders of the client’s physician. More simply stated, the Medical Massage Therapist is a massage therapist with advanced training in the assessment of soft tissue dysfunction and treatment that works with your doctor to relieve your pain, improve function and Range of Motion of joints, and improve posture as needed. Medical massage is usually a short session that’s targeted to one or a few areas.

3. Pregnancy Massage - has gained tremendous popularity by helping the mother-to-be remain comfortable during her pregnancy and in many cases have an easier delivery. Pregnancy massage relieves muscle spasms and cramps associated with the stress of extra weight bearing and physical changes that occur during pregnancy.

4. Trigger Point Therapy - directly targets trigger points and the muscles in which they’re found. In Trigger Point Therapy the Massage Therapist carefully seeks out the trigger points in a muscle with their fingers, knuckles, or elbows and uses specific compression techniques, friction strokes, and stretches which make the trigger points release and seemingly melt away. The release of the trigger point usually results in a rapid decrease or complete elimination of muscular pain. Trigger Point Therapy is a versatile technique and is often used to treat back pain, Jaw (TMJ) pain, headaches and migraines, whiplash, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, hip pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more.

5. Aromatherapy Massage - is a very relaxing and therapeutic massage incorporating the healthy benefits of massage and the powerful effects of essential oils for an incredible effect you’re going to love. Depending on your needs the Massage Therapist will adjust the massage and the varieties of essential oils for the desired effect.

All of the massage techniques described here can help you receive the health benefits of massage. Of course there are many more massage therapy techniques available that are relaxing, stress reducing, and that relieve chronic tension and pain. You actually don’t have to know what type of massage to ask for, you just need to know what you want to achieve. Do you just want to relax? Reduce muscle soreness? Relieve pain? Improve posture? Ask your massage therapist what they recommend for your particular health needs and get massaged today.

Get Healthy With Couples Massage

Lydia Hernandez asked:

Have you been looking for a healthy way to spend time with your significant other? Your busy schedules usually keep you from exercising together and with the fast pace of the day there’s not always time to plan a healthy meal. So what can you do together that takes you away from the same old places? How about a Couples Massage? A Couples Massage is done by two massage therapists in one room with the couple.

How can Couples Massage help you both stay healthy? Massage therapy helps you improve your health due to the many healthy benefits of massage including: improved circulation, greater flexibility, better sleep, feelings of wellness, stress reduction, and reduced muscular pain.

Now that you know that Couples Massage can help you improve your health, you might want to know what types of massage are available to you during a Couples Massage. There are many styles and techniques used in Couples Massage but there are some that are widely available that you can receive during your session. The best known massage therapy techniques for Couples Massage are:

1. Swedish Massage - this is the most common of massage techniques in the United States and perhaps the world. Swedish massage is known for its long gliding strokes, kneading strokes, friction strokes, and percussion as well as joint movements that feel great while improving range of motion. It’s most often thought of as a “spa” type of massage but it’s much more than that. Swedish massage is great for reducing stress, improving circulation, improving range of motion of your joints, and helping you actually feel better in your own skin. Swedish massage can range from light pressure to a heavier pressure depending on your comfort level.

2. Deep Tissue Massage - right behind Swedish massage, Deep Tissue Massage is one of the best known and most often requested massage techniques. This massage is used to root out chronic tension in the deeper musculature and connective tissues that contributes to pain and loss of range of motion in joints. While some practitioners use a heavier, sometimes uncomfortable, pressure in Deep Tissue Massage it should be noted that a more moderate pressure can reach deep tissues and achieve great results with little discomfort.

3. Hot Stone Massage - this massage is probably the most relaxing and luxurious massage used in Couples Massage. Heated stones are added to the massage and are used by the massage therapist to perform a mini heat treatment as well as gliding strokes that seem to melt away stress and tension.

4. Sports Massage - just like it sounds, Sports Massage is geared toward athletes at every level from professional to the “weekend warrior” and those who strive for a higher level of fitness. Rather than a specific form of massage, Sports Massage is generally a combination of massage techniques tailored to the athlete’s needs. The Sports Massage might be applied to one area to relieve pain or might be more general in nature to assure overall performance. Sports Massage is great for athletic couples.

5. Neuromuscular Therapy - also called “NMT”, Neuromuscular Therapy is a well known technique for relieving muscular pain throughout the body even “referred” pain that originates from someplace other than where it’s felt. This technique uses very targeted massage techniques, positioning, and stretching to release myofascial trigger points in muscles as well as restrictions in tendons, muscular attachments, and sometimes fascia surrounding the muscle.

All of the massage techniques described here can help a couple receive the health benefits of massage. Of course there are many more massage therapy techniques available during Couples Massage that are relaxing, stress reducing, and that relieve chronic tension and pain. You actually don’t have to know what type of massage to ask for, you just need to know what you want to achieve. Do you just want to relax? Reduce muscle soreness? Relieve pain? Improve posture? Ask your massage therapist what they recommend for your particular health needs and get massaged together.

Upper back pains. Should I see a back doctor, chiro, or a massage therapist?

33ea asked:

I got a new super comfy couch 3 weeks ago and a few times now I fell asleep on it. The following mornings, I had some neck pains (limited neck movement) for 3 to 4 days afterwards.
…but now, I still have this slight back pain that hasn’t really gone away since day 1 of getting the new couch and falling asleep on it. I didn’t feel any pain when moved some boxes this weekend, but I can feel the slight back pain when I’m laying on the couch or sitting in a chair. My neck pains have diminished 90% now, but I can feel some pain in the neck when I fully turn my head. I think the neck pains have something to do with the back pains. I really don’t want to spend $$ if I don’t have to just to get a referral from a doctor.
